Description
In 2002 we planted a few Manzanilla (Spanish Queen) olive trees, intended more as a wind break than a commercial venture. However the trees grew well and it was clear that we could produce olives commercially. Over the next few years more olives were planted, one large block where we pulled out the Ruby Cabernet vines which had been planted there originally, some in small blocks and some in lines as eventual shade trees on the farm roads. There are now some 3000 trees reaching an age to produce significant quantities of fruit. The varieties (Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina) and the number of each variety were carefully chosen so that a harvest of olives from the Faraway House Estate could produce a classic Tuscan style of blended olive oil. So far there is no plan to produce oil under the Faraway House brand name but that may come in time.
